The passport-photo background problem
Indian passport applications, most exam forms and many visa photos all specify the same thing: a plain, evenly-lit background, usually white or off-white. Real homes do not have studio walls — the photo that looked fine on the phone gets rejected for the curtain, the switchboard, or the shadow behind your head.
This tool fixes it with an AI model that understands where the person ends and the background begins — and unlike most background remover websites, the model runs inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works, honestly
On first use, a small segmentation model (about 1–2 MB) downloads to your browser. From then on, every photo is processed on your own device with WebAssembly: the AI produces a soft mask of the person, the mask is feathered at the edges, and the subject is composited onto the colour you choose. Your photo never crosses the internet — you can verify by watching the network tab, or by processing a second photo with the connection switched off.
The Edge slider handles the two classic failure modes: drag towards Tight when a fringe of the old background survives around the hair, and towards Loose when the cutout starts eating shoulders or ears. Fine flyaway hair is the hardest case for every tool in existence, including the paid ones — a sharp, well-lit original against a plainish wall will always beat a dark blurry one.
Which colour should you pick?
White or off-white for Indian passports, PAN, and nearly all exam forms. Light blue for some visa and ID photos.
